| Orange County pursuit policy nears completion Home |
| On Friday, August 8, another meeting of
the Orange County Sheriff's Office pursuit policy committee took place. While I cannot
reveal the details of the new policy, I can reveal some of the larger concepts involved in
the policy. A lot of effort has gone into making the policy clearer and more precise, with
extensive oversight and review of pursuit incidents, and with accountability of deputies,
supervisors and management. I have significant differences with most on the committee
concerning the crimes that deputies may pursue for, as well as some other issues. These
issues, I believe, prevent the OCSO policy from becoming the "world class"
policy I had hoped for, but at the same time I do not want to diminish the effort that
OCSO has put forth. The new policy will be more restrictive and more responsive to public
safety and it will be a vast improvement on the old. I would also like to thank the
members of the committee for the respect that they have afforded me, and my views, and for
thinking outside-the-box. Even the good-looking Italian guy. James Phillips 8/9/03
