COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (AP) -- A man wanted on several warrants led police officers on a highway chase in a stolen Indiana State Police cruiser before being caught, authorities said.

Robert J. Bonham, 22, stole Trooper Jason Ward's car after Ward arrived at Bonham's home near Columbia City on a report of a fight Monday, state police said.

When Ward arrived at the home, he reported seeing Bonham run away. Ward chased Bonham on foot, but Bonham was able to circle around, jump into the trooper's cruiser and drive off, police said.

About 20 minutes later, the car was spotted by police officers in Fort Wayne, about 15 miles to the east. It was pursued by several officers onto Interstate 69.

The chase ended when Bonham approached the U.S. 30 interchange, where construction crews were working.

"He eventually got caught up in traffic, the construction traffic, and eventually pulled over and gave himself up," state Trooper Todd Reed said.

State Trooper Robert Brophy said that how a squad car is parked at a scene varies on a case-by-case basis. The chase and how Ward's cruiser was stolen was being investigated.

Bonham has a long criminal record, including time in prison for burglary, theft and escape, police said.

He was being held Tuesday in the Whitley County Jail under $50,000 bail on felony charges of auto theft and two counts of resisting law enforcement.
