A Georgia State Patrol trooper
who was involved in a wreck during a three-county chase Monday night has died.
The trooper, Tony Lumley, 36, died late Tuesday morning at Grady Memorial Hospital from
injuries sustained in the wreck, said hospital spokeswoman Denise Simpson.
The chase started in Clayton County, and went through Henry County before ending in a
wreck on Ga. 16 in Spalding County.
State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said Clayton County police began chasing the man, a
suspect in an armed robbery and carjacking.
Lumley, who was assigned to the State Patrol's Griffin post, got involved in the
pursuit at U.S. 19/41 and Ga. 16 in Spalding County, Wright said.
About 9:30 p.m., "the patrol car and the suspect vehicle collided in some
manner," Wright said Tuesday. "We're still putting together the events of what
happened.
"Both vehicles left the roadway on opposite sides of the road," Wright said.
He said the trooper's vehicle went down an embankment, overturned and came to rest against
a steep bank.
Lumley was airlifted to Grady.
"He had multiple injuries, the most serious being head injuries," Wright
said.
The suspect, identified as Kenneth Brad Medlock, 26, was taken into custody by Clayton
County police and taken to Southern Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor
injuries.
